Julia Morgan Redwood Grove Estate

The Redwood Grove estate exemplifies the important role of residential architecture in Julia Morgan’s career.   Incorporating the natural surroundings and using local resources, Julia Morgan designed the estate using redwood inside and out, featuring exposed old growth redwood trusses as seen in the Great Room, natural stone fireplaces and state of the art reinforced concrete as seen in the lower quarters of the estate also known as the basement.

Julia’s style of blending buildings with their surroundings is evident in the earth-toned colors used for the exterior, local wildlife and vegetation murals in the interior, and driveways and walkways that meander around the property.   Designed in a Tudor and Craftsman style she aimed to please her clients, in this case Margaret Stewart, with both function and form.

For example intentional placement of rooms, doors and hallways allowed the hired help and estate owners to go about their day undisturbed by each other.  This private historic estate is a true hidden gem of Julia Morgan’s, showing off her architectural brilliance amongst the backdrop of the redwoods!
